Herpes is a viral infection that is transmitted through sexual and direct skin contact with the affected area. This disease is caused by two strains of virus which include the herpes simplex type 1 and herpes simplex type 2 strains. The type 1 strain results in blisters or cold sores in regions around the mouth including the lips and the gums. While the herpes symptoms associated with the type 2 virus include blisters in the genital areas. Herpes symptoms normally develop around 2 to 20 days following contact with an infected individual. Such symptoms can continue for a period of around 2 weeks and in some cases these symptoms are so mild that they may not even be noticed. In some other cases the symptoms associated with this condition may be rather severe. The herpes symptoms in the first outbreak tend to be more severe as compared to the subsequent outbreaks. The first outbreak may last for a period of around 10 to 21 days. The subsequent outbreaks are less severe and last for shorter periods because the body produces antibodies to fight the infection. The herpes symptoms develop as the virus enters the skin cells and starts multiplying thereby destroying some cells and the result is blisters. Initially a person may experience itching and tingling of skin and this may be followed with swelling in the lymph nodes. Some patients may also experience headache, muscle ache and pain in the thighs and buttocks. In the case of genital herpes patients may experience vaginal and penile discharge along with burning sensation during urination. Some patients also experience pain in the lower back regions. With time the blisters develop scabs and heal without scarring. Recurrences of herpes may be identified from the herpes symptoms also called prodromal symptoms. Many individuals suffering from herpes tend to experience around 4 recurrences every year. Certain triggering factors may result in recurrent herpes attacks and the associated herpes symptoms. These factors may include exposure to sunlight, menstruation, alcohol consumption, illness, surgical trauma and a compromised immune system. Initial diagnosis of herpes is done based on the symptoms which include inflammation in the initial stages along with tenderness and redness of skin. The blisters in this condition may be filled with clear or cloudy liquid. For accurate diagnosis blood tests along with viral culture may be done. Treatment of herpes includes taking antiviral medication. |
