Herpes Blisters
Herpes blisters are common symptoms or signs that affect those suffering from herpes. Herpes is a condition that is caused by a virus called the herpes simplex virus. Herpes may be caused by the herpes simplex type 1 strain and in this case the blisters erupt in regions around the lips and mouth. Where the herpes condition is caused by herpes simplex type 2 strains the sores erupt in regions around the genital areas. Herpes blisters caused by the type 1 strain are extremely common. In herpes the first outbreak is more painful and severe as compared to the recurrences. The recurrences also tend to last for less period of time as compared to the first outbreak. In oral herpes the outbreak occurs in regions around the mouth such as the tongue, throat and the gums. Once a person is exposed to this virus it remains within the body and becomes active from time to time. Reactivation of the virus occurs from time to time and may be because of skin trauma, exposure to sun, stress, fever, menstruation and other causes. The herpes blisters may include groups of tiny vesicles that are filled with clear or cloudy liquid. As a part of the initial or warning signs the skin in the affected area becomes itchy and tingling in that region starts. Following this redness is observed in the region and tiny red bumps erupt. Eventually blisters form and with time these ulcerate and crust over. The herpes blisters are most often seen on the lip border and in the case of genital herpes on the vagina, shaft and glans area of the penis and near the anus as well. Contact with the herpes blisters can result in transmission of the virus. If direct skin contact with the infected area occurs then it can result in the virus being transmitted. Eruption of the blisters can cause intense pain in some cases but in most cases the healing process starts quite quickly. On an average people experience one to four outbreaks every year. There is no permanent cure for herpes at this point of time and so treatment of herpes include taking antiviral medication. Acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir are commonly prescribed for this condition. Those having herpes blisters should wear loose clothing and avoid touching the sores. It is also advisable to wash hands after touching the infected areas. Diagnosis of herpes is often made by physical examination of the herpes blisters along with a blood test and other laboratory tests like a viral culture. Those suffering from herpes should avoid indulging in sex during the time the virus is active. Likewise it is advisable to take precaution in the form of condoms while indulging in sexual activity. |
