Male Herpes

Male herpes is another term for male genital herpes. This condition is transmitted if an infected person indulges in sexual intercourse which may include oral, vaginal or anal sex. Male genital herpes results from herpes simplex type 2 virus. This condition results in blisters and sores in the genital areas and the patients may also experience pain during urination.

Male herpes may also include other additional symptoms like fever or flu like symptoms, muscle aches along with headache. In some patients swollen lymph nodes in the groin areas may be observed and there may also be penile discharge in some cases. There is no complete cure for male genital herpes but with the use of some medication the symptoms can be effectively managed.

While in most cases of male herpes the HSV type 2 virus is responsible in some cases even the HSV type 1 virus can cause genital herpes. The initial symptoms or warning signs of genital herpes include tingling, itching and burning in the genital areas. This may be followed with swelling in the area and development of red bumps on penis, buttocks and the anus. Eventually the red eruptions turn into open sores that are rather painful.

After some time the open sores in male herpes scab over and heal without scarring. The symptoms of genital herpes begin around 3 to 7 days following any contact with the infected individual. In many cases of this disease the first outbreak may be quite severe and following recurrences may be relatively milder. It is advisable for patients to seek medical attention immediately after the infection is noticed.

Based on the physical examination of the male herpes symptoms along with laboratory tests and blood tests a physician will be able to make a diagnosis. Following a positive diagnosis of the condition a doctor will often prescribe antiviral medication. Famciclovir, acyclovir and valacyclovir are often prescribed for treatment of this condition.

Antiviral medication helps in reducing the problems or symptoms associated with male herpes or it at least helps to minimize their severity. Medicines also help in increasing the time period between outbreaks. Condoms should be used during sexual intercourse so as to ensure that virus is not transmitted to other individuals.
